Ski Utah Mobile App
Ski Utah is known for being able to give their users some of the most correct snow reports for ski resorts across the state of Utah. When my team took this project on, their app had been in use for about six years, but there were many issues with the overall structure of the app. Our agency stepped in to fix these problems with a full app design.
Context
Ski Utah is dedicated to promoting the ski and snowboard industry in the state of Utah. They provide information about the many resorts along with live snow and weather reports.
Problem
The existing Ski Utah app had a handful of problems. Two types of navigation, unclear hierarchy, and a confusing resort layout to name a few. We set to fix these problems with a full app redesign.
Role
As the design lead on this project, I helped lead the charge on the discovery, wireframing and design of the app. Other members on the team included a UX designer and a developer.
Discovery
I collaborated with our UX designer to break down the problem areas in the app, and in reviewing data and user reviews, we were able to begin the process of the redesign.
Wireframes
Continuing my collaboration with our other UX designer, we built out wireframes with a streamlined navigation and clear hierarchy. The proposed structure migrated the key content and grouped it according to frequency and utility provided to users.
Visual Design
As the only visual designer on the project, I utilized and added to the existing Ski Utah brand guide for typography and color palette.
The Results
App Store Success
In the six years before we updated the app, there were only 72 reviews total. After our team’s work, there were 150+ new reviews within only two ski seasons, with an average star rating of 4.8/5.
Pleased Clients
With the app’s success within the Utah ski and snowboard community, as well as local ski resorts, our contract was extended to provide app support and maintenance, and later work on blog and homepage redesigns as well as a passport portal.
